We leave Islamabad at 5:00 am and take the Hazara Motorway to Thakot, then the Karakoram Highway through Besham, Pattan and Dasu, since Babusar Pass is closed or unreliable by late October. It is a long day of about 12-13 hours with breakfast, lunch and tea stops. Dinner and overnight in Chilas.
After breakfast we drive up the KKH past Raikot Bridge to the Nanga Parbat viewpoint and the junction of three mountain ranges near Jaglot, then turn onto the Skardu road along the Indus through Alam Bridge. The drive takes about 6-7 hours. We reach Skardu in the afternoon and, if light allows, stop at Shangrila (Lower Kachura) before checking in.
A morning at Upper Kachura Lake, about 40 minutes from Skardu, with a walk along the shore. We then cross to Shigar to visit the restored Shigar Fort and stop at the Sarfaranga cold desert on the way back, where the dunes sit under snow-dusted peaks. Bonfire and BBQ dinner at the hotel.
We drive about 2.5 hours east along the Indus into Kharmang to Manthoka Waterfall, the last stretch by jeep on a rough road. In late autumn the valley is gold with poplars; in December and January the spray freezes into ice along the rocks. Back in Skardu we finish at the Katpana cold desert for sunset. Guests who prefer can swap Manthoka for Khaplu Fort and Chaqchan Mosque.
A relaxed breakfast and a short stop at Skardu bazaar for dry fruit and local shawls, then the drive back down the Indus to the KKH and Chilas, about 6-7 hours. Dinner and overnight in Chilas.
An early start for the KKH run back through Dasu and Besham to Thakot and the Hazara Motorway. Expect about 12-13 hours with meal stops; we aim to reach Islamabad between 8:00 and 10:00 pm.
